I'm the author of five novels: Sacred Site, Featherfoot, Paternoster, Holy Blood, and Devil's Chimney. Paternoster was nominated for a Gold Dagger from the Crime Writers' Association. I've also published over 60 commerical short stories in the UK and Australia, won or been shortlisted for 24 literary competitions, and had short stories published in several anthologies including Don't Know A Good Thing, Knife Edge and May You, and been published in the Nottingham Review, Scribble, Writers' Forum and The New Writer. I've judged two short story competitions, including the Gloucestershire Writers’ Network and Cheltenham Literature Festival Writing Competition.
I've researched and written nearly 30 non-fiction articles on genealogy, social history, writing, and well-being in magazines including Discover Your Ancestors, Your Family Tree, Planet Mindful, and Writers' Forum.
I've spoken about my work at several literature festivals, including the Bristol Crime Fest, Cheltenham Poetry Festival and the Cheltenham Literature Festival.
I have written a handful of audio scripts including a short audio drama that was selected for performance at the Ink Festival, and two drama monologues for the End of the Line drama podcast.
I hold MAs in Anthropology, English Literature and Scriptwriting, and I have a PhD in Anthropology. I love learning, and am currently taking a course in historical research skills.
After being awarded my PhD in Anthropology, I lived in Australia for a few years, conducting research into indigenous land access and native title. I authored the first native title connection report for the Yamatji region of Western Australia - an 80,000 word document setting out the basis on which an Aboriginal community claimed native title rights over 36,000 square kilometres of land, including areas with substantial gold, silver, copper and numerous rare earth mineral resources. This was against a background where historical and social circumstances made establishing a native title connection extremely challenging.
I also worked as part of an Australia-wide team to write a white paper to change the law to allow joint management of national parks (where management of conservation areas is carried out by indigenous traditional owners alongside conservationists) into Western Australia.
For the past 14 years I've worked as a freeelance writer and writing coach, helping business owners who want to write a book as part of their marketing toolkit. Many of the clients I worked with wanted an independent review of the books they wrote, and I expanded my business into developmental editing of non-fiction books.
In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, patchwork, exploring old buildings and walking in the countryside.
